Dairy Genetics Management/Dairy ET Veterinary Assistant -full-time
We have a position opening up for an assistant to a veterinarian who specialized in cattle reproduction. We are looking for someone with a strong interest in cattle, reproduction and dairy genetics. We work in partnership with a large dairy farm where we are using embryos to improve genetics and are using genomics testing. We would like someone to run our AI stud program (track pregnancies, births, take samples for testing, fill out needed paperwork, etc.), to assist with embryo transfer (we will train for working with embryos), and to help out in our small business wherever we need help.
This position includes organizing and managing the reproduction and embryo transfer program for a large dairy farm. Applicant would be responsible for embryo donor and recipient selection, herd health records, registering cattle through the Holstein EZ program, picturing cows, and maintaining health and genomic records for bull calves entering AI. This position would also assist with marketing animals to bull studs and other potential buyers.
The applicant would also serve as an embryo lab technician. This would involve searching for embryos with a microscope, assessing their quality, sorting and labeling them for freezing or transfer and completing associated records. We also are starting an IVF lab so some additional tasks may be related to IVF.
The job requirements are:
Bachelor’s degree in Dairy Science or related field
Reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license
Ability to work with cattle
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Attention to detail for record keeping
Computer experience with Word and Excel
Preference will be given to the following:
Experience with dairy animals and record keeping
Experience with Dairy Comp 305 or similar software
Experience with AI breeding
Travel
There will be some travel within SE WI and North Central Illinois. There will be required travel to a farm near Fort Atkinson.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Data entry and management
Direct work with cattle including taking blood and hair samples
Cleaning work areas and supplies
Will train to work with embryos, LN2
Miscellaneous jobs as assigned
